The Dell EMC PowerEdge R740 server is part of Dell's 14th generation server line and delivers enhanced application performance, high storage capacity, and plenty of expansion potential. Designed with built-in security features, administrators can rest easy knowing their mission-critical applications are protected from malicious threats. Database performance is ten times better with support for NVDIMMs, and Intel's new chipset provides 27% more cores than its predecessor. Three double-width or six single-wide GPUs can be added to this system to enhance VDI deployments and supports up to 50% more users than Dell's R730.
Powered by Intel's new C620 chipset, Administrators can install either one or two Intel Xeon Scalable processors with up to 28 cores per processor. With Intel's Advanced Vector Extension 512 (AVX-512), a set of new instructions with 512-bit vectors, twice the amount of registers are provided compared to Intel's AVX2 technology. Furthermore, hardware-based security technologies are built into Intel's silicon to protect data and system operations.
This system provides support for either LRDIMM or RDIMM memory modules with up to 24 DDR4 DIMM slots active in a two processor configuration. With dual processors, up to 12 x 16GB, single rank NVDIMMs can be installed and paired with 12 x 32GB RDIMM memory modules. LRDIMM modules are not compatible with NVDIMM memory modules. Speeds up to 2666 MT/s are supported on the Dell EMC R740, but this capability is dependent on the processor model, memory type, and memory configuration. A max memory footprint of 3TB is provided when using 128GB LRDIMM memory modules in all 24 DIMM slots.
Both large form factor (LFF) and small form factor (SFF) drives are supported on this system. A maximum internal storage capacity of 60TB is provided in a 16 SFF drive configuration, or an eight SFF configuration will provide a max storage capacity of 80TB for high-capacity storage applications. Dell's PowerEdge RAID Controllers (PERC) prevent data loss by backing up data to non-volatile memory in the event of a power-loss. For even more storage, Dell's PERC H840 will provide an extra eight external ports to support up to 240 SAS hard-disk or solid-state drives.
An expansion riser will support up to eight PCIe gen3 cards with x8 and x16 lanes. Dell's network daughter cards (NDCs) have a dedicated slot on the motherboard and act like an expansion board to make for easy network upgrades unlike network interface cards (NICs) which are integrated with the motherboard. The Dell R740 provides support for four different daughter card configurations: 4 x 1GbE, 2 x 10GbE + 2 x 1GbE, 4 x 10GbE, or 2 x 25GbE. Up front the chassis features to two USB 2.0 and an optional USB 3.0 port, and a singlemicro USB 2.0 port for iDRAC Direct. The rear of the chassis has two more USB 3.0 ports.
Operational tasks and costs are reduced with Dell's OpenManage Systems Management which is designed to automate and simplify routine management tasks. The integrated Dell Remote Access Controller 9 (iDRAC9) provides remote server administration that begins working the moment the power and network cables are connected. With the iDRAC enterprise license, System Lockdown capabilities are enabled to prevent unauthorized changes to the server's configuration or firmware. With Dell's OpenManage portfolio, administrators can customize an effective management solution to optimize their IT infrastructure.
