Overview
The Cisco PA-POS-OC3SML is a single-port adapter designed to provide a direct connection between supported routers or switch platforms and external networks.
Port Adapter Overview:

- The PA-POS-OC3SML interface serves as an independent OC-3c/STM1 port.
- It supports single-mode, long-reach optical connections.
- This port adapter is part of the Cisco 7200 Series routers and the Cisco 7301 router.
- Three models are available:
- PA-POS-OC3MM: Multimode.
- PA-POS-OC3SML: Single-mode, long reach.
- PA-POS-OC3SMI: Single-mode, intermediate reach.
SONET/SDH Overview:

- The POS specification addresses the use of PPP encapsulation over SONET/SDH links.
- SONET (Synchronous Optical Network) is an ANSI standard for optical digital transmission at hierarchical rates from 51.840 Mbps (STS-1) to 2.5 Gbps (STS-48) and beyond.
- SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) is the international standard for optical digital transmission at hierarchical rates from 155.520 Mbps (STM-1) to 2.5 Gbps (STM-16) and beyond.
- The PA-POS-OC3SML operates at the basic rate of STS-3c/STM-1 (155.520 Mbps), providing an available information bandwidth of 149.760 Mbps for user data.
- It removes section, line, and path overhead, making it suitable for point-to-point circuits.

Installation Options:

- The PA-POS-OC3SML can be directly installed in the port adapter slots of Cisco 7000VXR series routers and the Cisco 7301 router.
- Alternatively, it can be inserted into a Port Adapter Jacket Card (product ID: C7200-JC-PA) within the I/O controller slot of a Cisco 7200VXR router equipped with an NPE-G1 or NPE-G2 processor for additional bandwidth.
