Juniper MX204 factory reset

Performing a factory reset on a Juniper MX204 router will erase all configurations, settings, and data on the device, reverting it to its original state when first purchased. This is useful when you want to start fresh, especially in troubleshooting or re-deployment scenarios.

Here are the steps to perform a factory reset on the Juniper MX204:

Warning:

  • Back up your configurations and any important data before performing a factory reset, as all settings and data will be wiped out during the reset process.

Steps for Factory Reset on Juniper MX204:

  1. Access the Device:

    • Via Console Port: Connect your laptop or PC to the router’s console port using a console cable.
    • Use terminal emulation software (like PuTTY or Tera Term) to connect to the router. Set the baud rate to 9600 bps, with 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, and no flow control.
  2. Log in to the Router:

    • If the router is running, log in to the system using the appropriate credentials (username and password).
    • The default username is usually root, and if there is no password set, you can simply press Enter.
  3. Enter Recovery Mode (if necessary):

    • If the router is unresponsive or you want to ensure a full reset, you can restart the router and interrupt the boot process to enter Single-User Mode (also called Recovery Mode).
    • Power cycle the router (turn off and on).
    • When the router starts booting, press any key to interrupt the boot process.
    • You should be prompted to enter Single-User Mode (for recovery).
  4. Use the CLI to Enter Factory Reset Command:

    • Once logged in, to clear the configuration and restore the router to its factory default state, run the following command in CLI:

      bash
      request system zeroize
      • This command will wipe the configuration, logs, and data from the router.
  5. Confirm the Action:

    • The system will ask for confirmation to proceed with the factory reset. Type yes to confirm and proceed.

    • Example:

      bash
The system will be zeroized. This will delete all data. Do you want to continue? (yes/no): yes
  6. Wait for the Reset Process:

    • The router will now reset to factory defaults. The process may take a few minutes to complete. During this time, the router will clear all configurations, interfaces, and settings.
    • After the process is complete, the router will automatically reboot.
  7. Reboot the Router:

    • Once the reset is completed, the router will reboot. You should now have a fresh installation of JunOS with no previous configurations.
    • You can reconnect to the router via the console port to start configuring it from scratch.
  8. Verify Factory Reset:

    • After the reset, the router should be back to its factory default state with default settings.
    • Log in with the default username (root) and password (if no password has been set previously).

Additional Notes:

  • Factory Reset Effects: This process will remove all configurations, including interface settings, routing information, and security settings.
  • Junos Recovery: If for some reason the reset process fails or you need to restore the device from a backup, you can reinstall or recover Junos from USB or TFTP.

Conclusion:

By following the above steps, you will successfully reset your Juniper MX204 router to its factory default settings, enabling you to start with a clean configuration. Always remember to backup any critical configurations before performing a factory reset to avoid data loss.
